We have all the time in the world
Time enough for life To unfold
all the precious things
Love has in store

We have all the love in the world
If that’s all we have you will find We need nothing more

From the one and only…

WAITS

The piano has been drinking, My necktie is asleep, And the combo went back to New York, The jukebox has to take a leak, And the carpet needs a haircut, And the spotlight looks like a prison break, ‘Cause the telephone’s out of cigarettes, And the balcony is on the make, And the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking, And the menus are all freezing, And the light man’s blind in one eye, And he can’t see out of the other, And the piano tuner’s got a hearing aid, And he showed up with his mother, And the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking, As the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler, Cream-puff casper milktoast, And the owner is a mental midget, With the I.Q. of a fence post, ‘Cause the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking, And you can’t find your waitress, With a Geiger counter, And she hates you and your friends, And you just can’t get served without her, And the box-office is drooling, And the bar stools are on fire, And the newspapers were fooling, And the ashtrays have retired, ‘Cause the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking, The piano has been drinking, Not me, Not me, Not me, Not me, Not me

But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget.
Like the strangers that you’ve met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they’re not listening still.
Perhaps they never will…”

BUCKINGHAM

“Just a time within a time… just a scheme within a scheme
A little world within a world… just a dream just a dream
And now I’ve finally found my way… now I know just what to do
Once you said goodbye to me….. now I say goodbye to you

Now I best be on my way.. before the night turns blue
Once you said goodbye to me…. now I say goodbye to you
Once you said goodbye to me… now I say goodbye to you”

COHEN

“Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

I’m sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can’t stand the scene.
And I’m neither left or right
I’m just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I’m stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I’m junk but I’m still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.”

WAITS

The piano has been drinking,
My necktie is asleep,
And the combo went back to New York,
The jukebox has to take a leak,
And the carpet needs a haircut,
And the spotlight looks like a prison break,
‘Cause the telephone’s out of cigarettes,
And the balcony is on the make,
And the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking,
And the menus are all freezing,
And the
light man’s blind in one eye,
And he can’t see out of the other,
And the piano tuner’s got a hearing aid,
And he showed up with his mother,
And the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking,
As the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler,
Cream-puff casper milktoast,
And the owner is a mental midget,
With the I.Q. of a fence post,
‘Cause the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking,
And you can’t find your waitress,
With a Geiger counter,
And she hates you and your friends,
And you just can’t get served without her,
And the box-office is drooling,
And the bar stools are on fire,
And the newspapers were fooling,
And the ashtrays have retired,
‘Cause the piano has been drinking.

The piano has been drinking,
The piano has been drinking,
Not me,
Not me,
Not me,
Not me,
Not me

“Day after day, alone on the hill
The man with the foolish grin
Is keeping perfectly still…

But nobody wants to know him
they can see that he’s just a fool
And he never gives an answer

But the fool on the hill..
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head…
See the world…spinning around

Well on the way, his head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices
talking perfectly loud…

But nobody ever hears him
or the sound he appears to make
And he never seems to notice”

WAITS

But romeo is bleeding and nobody can tell
And he sings along with the radio
With a bullet in his chest
And he combs back his fenders
And they all agree it’s clear
That everything is cool now that romeos here
But romeo is bleeding
And he winces now and then and he leans against
The car door and feels the blood in his shoes
And someones crying in the phone booth
At the 5 points by the store
Romeo starts his engine
And wipes the blood of the door
And he brodys through the signal
With the radio full blast
Leavin the boys there hikin up their chinos
And they all try to stand like romeo
Beneath the moon cut like a sickle
And they’re talkin now in spanish about their hero
But romeo is bleeding as he gives the man his ticket
And he climbs to the balcony at the movies
And he’ll die without a whimper
Like every heros dream
Just an angel with a bullet
And cagney on the screen

  1. Michael, love the first one! I also love Thomas Grey’s quote x

  2. Lovely thoughts
    and
excellent reminders of what is truly of value.

    Jjj

  3. Wonderful choices. And I like the layout and the photos you’ve chosen, M.

Here is a quote (translation) that is on the wall in my studio:

Plato thought that the sane should not be allowed to write poetry:

“He who approaches the temple of the muses without inspiration, in the belief that craftsmanship alone suffices, will remain a bungler and his presumptuous poetry will be obscured by the songs of the maniacs.”
    -Plato-

  4. Enjoyed these, Michael.
Here is one of my favorites that I keep on my altar.

  5. I am really enjoying this post, (big Stevie Nicks fan). I came across this quote today in a book I am reading and made me think of your post, “words to live by”.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
    Explore. Dream. Discover.

    All the best, Sheila

  6. you have some great one’s and they ALL inspire me, are all great, I I love music like that too…..

thanks for sharing your spirit….. and the pics w. the songwriters, lovely.

  7. Speaking of Leonard Cohen….his song Hallelujah is one of my all time favourites and if you happened to see K.D. Lang sing it at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics ( which is taking place in my corner of the world) I think anyone would have to agree the way she sang it was hauntingly beautiful.

  8. Missed the opening Sheila…sadly – I happen to think that the winter games are a far superior spectacle to the summer games and Vancouver is a great host city site…. sister city to Melbourne ;-)
I agree with you on Hallelujah from Mr Cohen. Don’t know if he is at his Greek island home currently (Hydra)… would love to do an interview with him. Thank you for your comment as always ;-)

  9. Finn Jacobsen

Really like your collection”(especially amusing to find the rather unknow “Faraway eyes” by Mr Jagger and Mr Richards). My contribution to your collection would be a rather more wellknown item, “Mr Tambourine man” by Mr Zimmerman.

“Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come followin’ you”

  10. Okay, making my way up off the floor! This post had IMPACT. Your choices are sublime, my invisible friend. The only one that didn’t quite make it was McCartney’s ‘the love you take is equal to the love you make..’ I’m fond of Youngbloods… very 60s ish, but still…
Love is but the song we sing,
And fear’s the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
    Or make the angels cry
Know the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why
    C’mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev’rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

    • thanks Sam… pleased you found your way to this page… like the Youngbloods verse too… it’s poetry really. Btw… the line you quote from McCartney is supposedly the line that made John Lennon realise that there is a lot more to Paul McCartney than the world realised (his words). If you can think of any more classics please drop by again… your thoughts are always appreciated ; ))

  11. I love this one by Seal (Crazy), it matches perfectly with the feel of your blog and the beautiful island of Santorini:
“In a sky full of people, only some want to fly,
    Isn’t that crazy?
In a world full of people, only some want to fly,
    Isn’t that crazy?
    Crazy…
But we’re never gonna survive unless, we get a little crazy.. crazy..
No we’re never gonna to survive unless we are a little… crazy..”
    Hold on to the dream!

  12. Dearest Signore Santorini – As always your taste is exquisite – sublime. You send me aloft on waves of emotions and memories, images of people, places and events; some dear, some not… but always precious because I lived them.. And if ever manage to visit your magical island, I shall ply you with a couple of bottles of good wine to play some of those wonderful tracks while we look at the sea from the rooftop..
