And so this is Xmas…

It’s been a trying year the world over… a year of difficulties faced by many, a year of uncertainty for many more. Let’s hope, like the soldiers that called the incredible “Christmas Truce” in WW1… everyone stops the insanity and takes a few days to stop and think about what we are all doing on this small planet… against each other and against the planet itself.

There were any number of images that I had slowly collected over the past weeks, from which I was going to select one for my Christmas post… sending with it my best wishes to everyone all around the world. All kinds of images… cute, colourful, Christmasy, traditional, wintery etc etc etc.

But last week I happened to be driving past that most sacred of sites (at least it is for me) and I saw something that suddenly made me realise that all the commercial images I had collected  were superficial nonsense.

The site was this…

Kolonos Hill – 300 Spartan final resting place

Just to the right of the leaves you see above… some inspired soul left this for all visitors to see:

“And so happy Christmas – war is over…if you want it” sang John Lennon

Love to you and yours…where ever you are

and Peace for all of us!

  1. A lovely place and precious heart shape. Lovely and Perfect. Peace to you and yours Michael. I too so wish the world could be different. Perhaps when families all over the world come together this Christmas . . . those that celebrate . . . they will talk about what did not happen at Copenhagen . . . what will happen in Afghanistan and maybe they will say in unison . . . ENOUGH! A great movement might be built that would bring about change . . . towards sane policies and action towards green sustainable energy. It will be the only way for we . . . the people of the world can truly demand PEACE on EARTH and GOOD WILL TOWARDS ALL MEN and WOMEN. Merry Christmas Michael! Thank you for all your kind words and for this wonderful journal of your life in Oia. Best Wishes, Carol

  2. I was thinking of picking that movie about this amazing Xmas truce and watch it during the holiday.
Well…yes dear, shall we still be optimistic and wish the world less craziness for next year ?
But for you i wish you lots and lots of joy to you and your loved ones !!
And of course….may this new year bring tons of lovely projects !!! :-)

  3. Download Christmas In My Soul by the late, great Laura Nyro. It has all the things you write about. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

  4. Caro Michael,

Ditto! Thanks for giving us all sth to think about. Again. You always turn our minds on, Michael.

This time your heart says it all. I am convinced peace starts at home. One man can make a change, if “he wants it”.

Wish you and your family Buon Natale, Buone Feste and all the best for the next Santorini year! Bacione, Ingrid in Umbria

  5. Beautiful post, there is so much more to think about at christmas than all the commercial trappings. I especially think about all the men and women who are spending their time in the middle east during xmas, and how lucky we are to be safe and sound home with our families. Your message reminds us that this has been going on for such a long time. Too long. Your John Lennon quotes are right on, his song for a hope for peace never sounds old or out dated. I wish you and your family “Merry Christmas” and more dreams to fulfill in the new year. Take care, Sheila

  6. I wish you and your family a very happy Christmas Michael…xv

  7. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, Michael.

    Catherine xx

  8. Merry Christmas to you and your family Michael, and all the best for 2010.
